i watched Doctor Zhivago yesterday. i love period pieces set in foreign lands where the cast only speak one language (english for example) but the songs are sung and the literary props like signs, newspapers or magazines are written in the native language. subtitles are good too, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. go one way - all subtitles or the other - no subtitles and unilingual dialog.

contrast this with films like K-19 or the Hunt for Red October where most of the dialog is english but a few ‘nyet’s, ‘da’s and subtitles are thrown in, at random and with poor accents. it breaks up the continuity of the film and makes my mind fluctuate from ‘watching and understanding’ to ‘watching and sometimes not understanding’.

ps. the film was shot in Spain! i never would have picked Spain as a geographic substitute for Russia.
